What is Mole Removal?

Moles, or nevi, are common growths that appear anywhere on the skin. They usually show up in early childhood or the first 20 years of life, though they can also appear later in life. Moles occur when nevus cells grow in a cluster instead of spreading out throughout the skin. The best way to determine if a mole is abnormal, is to have it assessed with a dermatologist, which is available at DermAtelier on Avenue.  During your assessment, there will be the opportunity to discuss your mole and whether removal treatment is recommended.  If so, various forms of treatment are available

MOLE REMOVAL TREATMENT

During your appointment, your dermatologist will assess your mole to determine its regularity.  Regular moles may be removed optionally, based on your cosmetic preference.

The two most common ways of removing a mole include:

Shave Excision: During a shave excision, our dermatologist will use a special tool to skillfully shave off the mole. Stitches are not usually needed.

Surgical Excision: During surgical excision, a bladed tool is used to help remove the mole down to the fatty layer. Stitches are required to close the incision.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR MOLE REMOVAL?

Once you’ve been reassured that your mole has regular clinical features, you may prefer to have it removed.  This may be the preference of younger or older patients, male or female patients.  The key factor at DermAtelier on Avenue is that a diagnosis will be provided to you, and all therapeutic options will be discussed, prior to treatment at the affected site.  Regular moles that are removed are sent for analysis or “histopathology assessment” to provide a tissue diagnosis based on the mole’s microscopic features.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER MOLE REMOVAL?

Once a mole has been removed, the site is now a wound.  You will receive instructions at DermAtelier on Avenue detailing how best to care for the mole removal site over the weeks and months to come.  Should you require stitch removal, you will return to the office for this procedure.  Mole removal sites develop scars that mature over the course of a 12-month period. There are certain products and materials that can help provide optimal skin healing and help minimize scarring at the site of mole removal.  The most important aspect following the procedure is to have patience.  Should your scar require any refinement or optimization treatments, this too is available at DermAtelier on Avenue.
