Why Clinical Trials?
Clinical trials are critical to the advancement of medical research and the medicines we take. The process helps determine safety and effectiveness of treatments for conditions that are difficult to treat. This benefits both the participants in the trial, as well as future patients who will receive the medication.
It takes 10–15 years on average to fully develop a new therapy.
Each trial must be approved by a research ethics board and meet the highest standards of ethics and medical practice. Clinical trials put patient safety at the forefront as well as provide access to treatments that are more targeted, and more effective than ever before. At DermAtelier On Avenue, we strive to include groups of patients who may have been excluded from or overlooked for trials previously. We want our clinical trial participants to reflect the population of patients we actually meet and treat.
Clinical Trials - Frequently Asked Questions
A clinical trial is a planned scientific research experiment that involves volunteer participants, doctors, nurses and researchers with a plan or “protocol” to test a new medical treatment.
It is an important process to advance healthcare for diseases that have no cure. By trialling treatments, researchers can learn about their safety and effectiveness and patients can determine whether a treatment helps them.
Screening is one appointment before the trial begins.
At the appointent, you are encouraged to ask questions about the trial and we discuss potential risks and benefits of the trial.
Once you fully understand the details of the trial, we ask for your signed consent to proceed in the trial.
Participation is entirely voluntary, and you can leave at any time for any reason without consequence.
The treatment period is the main part of the trial, when you’ll receive either the study drug or a placebo (a non-medicine control).
Some trials allow participants to switch to the active drug after a set period.
You’ll attend scheduled visits at the clinic for health assessments that help doctors stay on top of your condition and actively research the potential of the study intervention.
You are compensated / paid for your visits
The follow-up stage begins after the treatment period is complete. You’ll stop using the study drug and attend brief check-in appointments over the following weeks or months.
These visits help doctors understand how long the treatment effects last, whether there are any other delayed reactions, and how your body continues to benefit after stopping the medication.
In most trials, neither you or the doctor will know which group you are in at the start. Generally, there is the opportunity for all participants to be in the group that receives treatment.
If you no longer want to be in the trial, you notify our coordinator. We can discuss the reason which you want to stop the trial and you are able to stop the trial.
We welcome your interest and you may contact the clinic by phone at 416.787.6060 and inform the staff that you are interested in participating in a clinical trial.
