WHAT ARE KENALOG INJECTIONS?

Scars are a natural part of your body’s healing process and form when your body repairs a wound to the deeper, dermal layer of the skin. As your body forms new collagen fibers to fix the damage, this results in a scar. In some people, fibroblasts produce too much collagen during healing, which can lead to raised scars.

Kenalog (triamcinalone acetonide) injections are specifically formulated to combat inflammation and can be used to improve the appearance of raised scars, including surgical scars, injury scars, and hypertrophic scars. These injections are often the first-line option for treating raised scars and may help reduce their size, swelling, redness, itching, or tenderness.

KENALOG INJECTION TREATMENT

During treatment, lidocaine may be injected first to ensure your comfort. Then, Kenalog will be injected into the scar, to help flatten them. Usually, 2-3 injections are needed a 1 – 2 months apart, and injections may continue for six months or longer. Newer raised scars tend to be more responsive than older, more established scars.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR KENALOG INJECTIONS?

Individuals with keloid or hypertrophic scars who are unhappy with the appearance or feel of their scars can benefit from Kenalog injections. Those who have not responded to other treatment options are also good candidates. Patients who have an allergy to corticosteroids should not receive this treatment. The best way to determine if Kenalog injections are right for you is through a consultation with Dr. Beach

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER KENALOG INJECTIONS?

Patients may experience redness at the injection site following Kenalog injections. There is no downtime following treatment, so you can return to your everyday routine as soon as you feel comfortable. The speed at which results are seen will differ from patient to patient depending on the size, stage, and size of the keloid.

If you form scars in the future, there are some ways to help minimize their appearance. Scar tissue is most sensitive in the weeks and even months after an injury, so using sunblock when outside is important to avoid discoloration. Research has also shown that gently massaging the scar may help to break down scar tissue as it forms. This may prevent raised scars from developing.
