WHAT CAN INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL) DO FOR ME?
Intense pulsed light (IPL) uses several wavelengths of light during treatment. This light is more scattered and less focused than a laser. It penetrates the epidermis, causing less damage to the skin. Pigment cells in the skin absorb the light energy, which is then converted into heat. This heat destroys unwanted pigment to clear up redness in the skin. The result is more radiant skin that looks more clear and refreshed.
During IPL treatment, the targeted area will first be cleaned. Then, the IPL device will apply light pulses to the skin. Patients will need to wear glasses during treatment to protect the eyes. While treatment is not painful, it may feel similar to being snapped with a rubber band. Treatment usually takes 20-30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the area being treated.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR IPL TREATMENT?
Anyone with red tones or faint brown tones that are disliked or cause self-consciousness can benefit from treatment with IPL. An in-person assessment at DermAtelier on Avenue is the best way to determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment option.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER IPL TREATMENT?
Following IPL treatment, you should be able to return to their regular activities while performing strict sun avoidance. The treated area(s) may be red, swollen, or sensitive for a few hours, feeling similarly to a sunburn. Avoidance of hot water on the skin also helps limit discomfort. For best results, individuals may need to have 3-6 treatment sessions spaced about one month apart. We recommend avoiding sun exposure after and in between treatment sessions to maximize treatment benefit.
