WHAT ARE CHEMICAL PEELS?

Chemical peel application is a cosmetic procedure performed to help encourage your skin to improve over a shorter period of time – for smoother texture, enhanced radiance, decreased acne, or evened pigmentation. A peel has active ingredients in it that are applied on the skin for short contact. The sequence of their application helps to achieve the desired result. This treatment is a great solution to help achieve results more swiftly and may be used as a complement to prescription medications. Chemical peels can be tailored and tweaked to be suitable and effective across a variety of patient skin types and skin tones.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A CHEMICAL PEEL?

First, the skin will be cleansed.  Then a series of specific medical-grade masks and treatments will be applied to the skin in a certain sequence to help boost skin radiance, suppress acne, improve pigment consistency.  A cream or serum may be applied after treatment to soothe the skin or help boost the effects of the chemical peel ingredients used. The procedure usually takes ~30 minutes to complete.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Following a chemical peel, you may experience mild redness and swelling and a tingling sensation. Overall healing time will vary, depending on your skin’s resilience, and can occur over 1 – 5 days. It is important to avoid sun exposure for the first couple of days, to help avoid sunburn.  Dr. Beach will provide you with instructions on how to protect and care for your skin between treatment sessions.  Most patients need a few treatments spaced weeks apart before any changes are seen.  Chemical peels are often complemented with prescription regimens or medical grade skin care therapy in between treatment sessions.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A CHEMICAL PEEL?

When you want to improve the appearance of skin texture and fine lines, curb acne, boost skin tone evenness, you may benefit from chemical peels. Those with a history of severe eczema or psoriasis, or taking oral retinoid therapy like isotretinoin, should not undergo chemical peels. The best way to determine if this treatment is right for your cosmetic goals is to schedule a consultation with our clinical team, during which she can examine your skin and create a suitable plan for you.
