What is BOTOX®/Xeomin®?

Every day we make many facial expressions, all of which require the movement of facial muscles. Over time, repeated use of these facial muscles can lead to lines and wrinkles.  Neuromodulators, like BOTOX® and Xeomin® are injectable treatments that temporarily reduce fine facial lines and wrinkles. They are formulated with onabotulinum toxin type A and incobotulinumtoxin A, which block the nerve signals to the muscle in which it was injected. This stops the muscles from being able to contract, smoothing out unwanted lines and wrinkles. These injectables can be used to:

  • Smooth lines on the forehead (“newspaper lines”), between the eyebrows (“11’s”) and around the eyes (“crow’s feet”).
  • Diminish the appearance of neck bands.
  • Soften the appearance of skin dimpling on the chin.
  • Modify a gummy smile.
  • Decrease a downturned “sad” smile.

The main difference between BOTOX® and Xeomin® lies in their formulation, which influences how much the product will spread, and how quickly results can be seen. While BOTOX® is formulated with an accompanying protein, Xeomin® does not contain any accompanying protein.

BOTOX®/Xeomin® Treatment with Dr. Beach

BOTOX® or Xeomin® injections yield beautiful results when applied by our dermatologist who understands the underlying musculature anatomy and the interplay between facial contractions, facial proportions, and facial volume. The injection feels like a small pinch. A very thin needle is used to inject small amounts of botulinum toxin type A into the targeted areas. The number of injections needed will depend on the extent of your wrinkles, your facial features, and your desired result. Usually, treatment takes less than 15 minutes to complete.

Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX®/Xeomin®?

When you have wrinkles or lines that make you appear tired, angry, or look older than you feel, you can benefit from BOTOX® or Xeomin® treatment.  The best way to determine if this treatment is right for you is to schedule an in-person consultation with Dr. Beach.

What to Expect After BOTOX®/Xeomin® Treatment?

Following BOTOX® or Xeomin® injections, you can generally return to your everyday routine.   However, avoiding both alcohol and strenuous exercise will help to avoid bruising that same day.  Mild redness or swelling may occur, which will dissipate within an hour or two. It is important that you do not massage or rub the treated areas, as this may cause the product to spread to other areas of the face.  Results can often be seen within two days, though it may take up to two weeks for full results to become apparent. Results often last 3-4 months before touch-up injections are needed. If injections are discontinued, your wrinkles and lines will gradually return. At DermAtelier on Avenue, you will receive an after-treatment information sheet to help you understand after-procedure care and protocol.
