Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)- FAQ’s / FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a specialized in-office treatment used for certain skin conditions such as actinic keratoses and sun damage. It combines specific wavelengths of light with a prescription cream, “Metvix” (methyl aminolevulinic acid) to create a reaction that will destroy the abnormal/damaged skin cells while preserving the healthy skin around the affected sites.

What can I expect during my treatment?

Affected sites will be identified by the dermatologist, with some sites curetted/scraped lightly. Then Metvix – the topical prescription cream – is applied to the affected sites. After approximately 3 hours, a specialized light – intense pulsed light (IPL) – will be used to activate the medication and treat the sun-damaged skin.

What can I expect after treatment?

The treated sites may appear red, inflamed, feel warm, and/or feel a tingling/burning sensation. It will be important to avoid sunlight for 48 hours after treatment, as your skin will be extremely sensitive. After 1-2 days, you may experience peeling/dryness at the treated sites, which is normal. You can resume your regular activities within 3-5 days.

What other options are available for treatment of my sun damage?

Other options include prescription creams, such as Efudex (6 weeks of treatment), Zyclara (6 weeks of treatment, Aldara (6-8 weeks of treatment), and liquid nitrogen (best when there are only a few sites)

How many sessions will I need?

Significant improvement can be noted after 1-2 sessions

Time and schedule permitting, a 2nd session can be arranged, which achieves greater clearance

Who is NOT a candidate for this treatment?

Patients who are taking sun-sensitizing medications such as Accutane/Epuris, doxycycline, tetracycline, diuretics/water pills (hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide), amitriptyline and more. Please provide us with an updated medication list prior to treatment

Patients with darker skin types – Fitzpatrick 4-6 (brown/black skin)

You are pregnant/breastfeeding

You have a history of Vitiligo

Is this procedure covered by OHIP?

The use of light in the form of IPL and laser is not insured by OHIP for this procedure. Payment is done at the end of the procedure and can be paid by debit, credit or e-transfer. An invoice and receipt will also be provided.

Is the medication insured by my private insurance plan?
